His work seeks to combine design excellence and social engagement and is characterized by precise geometry and stillness. An emerging theme of Burnsʼ work is the integration of landscape and structure – to move beyond devices of framing to create complete synthesis between building and landscape.
Australia House, Niigata Japan
Built after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 3/11, Australia House is a gallery, atelier and emergency shelter. It stands in the small village of Urada as a place where relationships between local community, visiting artists, landscape and audiences are brought into focus.

Crescent House
Crescent House is an installation, originally installed at Sydneyʼs Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation and now permanently located at Heide Museum of Contemporary Art. The structure heightens the perception of landscape, using the device of framing to imbue a finite landscape with an expectation of vastness.

Gibbon's Rent
Gibbonʼs Rent is a permanent garden, stealthily installed in back lanes of Londonʼs Bermondsey. Large pots are placed throughout the garden by Southwark Council. The local community has completed the scheme, bringing pots and plants to embellish and soften the geometry of the scheme.

Venice Biennale Proposal
The Venice Biennale proposal explored the concept of openings, as central to Australian Architecture. A lightweight temporary pavilion was proposed, fully constructed from aluminium plate, with the varying structural elements required expressed directly on the roof, becoming a sort of ʻstructural landscapeʼ.
